Impeachment Plot: Bankole Fires Back, Vows To Nail Dissidents If…....

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, on Thursday launched a reprisal attack on his opponents in the House who are angling for his removal from office, vowing to wield the big stick on them if they refused to back down.
Bankole, speaking through the Minority Leader, Ali Ndume, said the House has been lenient with the dissident members for a long time, despite having in its kitty enough security reports that could make the House leadership nail them.
A group of aggrieved members, under the aegis of “Progressives”, led by Dino Melaye and West Idahosa, had on Wednesday issued a seven-day ultimatum on Bankole to resign or be flushed out of office through impeachment.
The group had accused Bankole of tyranny, ineptitude, high-handedness, victimisation and financial impropriety.
It threatened to turn over to appropriate security agencies, incriminating documents gathered on his alleged corrupt activities in the House.
The group also threatened to make the House ungovernable for the Speaker when the House resumes plenary on June 22.
However, Ndume on Thursday said the threat by the group will amount to naught as he vowed that the House leadership was prepared to resist any plot to destabilise it on resumption of business.
He also dared the group to come out with the so-called “incriminating documents” for authentication, noting that the House had severally uncovered many fake documents being bandied as tools for blackmailing the leadership, most especially during the car purchase scandal.
Addressing a group of journalists in his office in Abuja, the lawmaker said the leadership of the House had for long restrained itself from applying the big stick against members whose activities have been inimical to the stability of the House.
“Enough is enough, the leadership is not in the mood to entertain a crack in either its fold or among members. We believe in the spirit of camaraderie and that is the reason why we overlooked security reports against erring members,” he said.
He stated further that each of those listed as members of the “Progressive minded members”, had very weighty issues pending before the House leadership, which, he added, warranted some measure of penalty.
