Ibom Seaport to be completed by 2018
Chief Godswill Akpabio started developing the Ibom deep seaport in 2011, which is expected to create 100,000 jobs for Nigeria’s largely unemployed population.
Ibom Seaport stands on over 129 kilometers stretch of land, the Ibom port area would be a self-sustaining industrial city.
A multimodal transport system would be built to include rail lines linking Port-Harcourt and Calabar.
The area designated for the project has the longest coastline and just five kilometers to the capital city. With a depth of between 15 and 18 meters water channel and 129 kilometers stretch of land it has some of the best port features that could be found anywhere in the world. With Ibom deep seaport, we will have a seaport that will not require perennial dredging. Investors will be in business for a very long time without bothering about dredging. The port will serve all countries in the Gulf of Guinea. The peaceful nature of the community and availability of undeveloped land will make the area a self-sustaining industrial city when the port is completed. In addition to the port, the area will also habour independent power plants, refinery and industries. It sounds great and unbelievable but achievable,
Which will strengthen our country’s position in oil and gas sector in the world. Ibom Seaport will be the Nigeria’s gateway to the rest of the world through the Gulf of Guinea.The Ibom Seaport will also serve as a viable alternative for traders in the eastern part of Nigeria who mostly rely on the over-crowded Seaports in Lagos. Akwa Ibom State Government is hereby encouraged to put in adequate measures to ensure smooth take-off of Ibom Seaport in 2018. Governors from the South East are encouraged to look into the possibility of partnering with Akwa Ibom State Government in the interest of businessmen domiciled in the south east. It is our hope that Federal Government will not impose unnecessary high tariffs in Ibom Seaport come 2018, and that Lagos Seaports will be properly De-congested by the coming on stream of Ibom Seaport.

My thoughts on how to stop Phone Theft
I have heard different stories about people who lost their phones either by their own carelessness or by no fault of theirs. I too have lost my phone once, but the focus will be on ways to checkmate re-use of stolen phones. Imagine you trying to shop in a large mall or market and before you are done with your shopping, your phone is gone. The truth is that your phone can be stolen anywhere, office, bus, mall, stadium etc.
One thing we should know, for those who do not know, is that virtually every phone has an anti-theft feature. This anti-theft feature helps the owner of the phone to prevent the person who stole the phone from using it. It also allows the owner to send messages to the stolen phone to either block, delete stored data or damage the phone.
The Anti-theft feature also allows you to locate the stolen
phone on the map. Some apps also come with this Anti-theft feature.
The
problem is that most users of phones do not see the need to turn on this
Anti-theft feature. We all should start appreciating the usefulness of the
Anti-theft feature, which will go a long way to curb the activities of phone
theft/swindlers.
When we
finally get most users to turn on the Anti-theft feature, another problem is
that of phone unlocking softwares and its users. I recently went to buy a new
phone at a Phone Shop, and I asked the owner why I cannot retrieve or stop the
phone from being used by another person, and he replied that there is no way to
retrieve a stolen phone since the person who stole can easily unlock the phone
from any phone unlocking operator. I was short of words to say the least. Even
when your phone is locked after being stolen, the person who stole the phone
will take it to a phone technician, who would help to unlock the phone for a
fee, or the person who stole the phone would unlock the phone by himself if he/she
has the unlocking software or has access to a website that unlocks blocked phones.
This is
where the need to ban phone unlocking softwares arises. Phone technicians
should be treated with utmost importance all over the world especially in
developing nations. This is a clarion call to security agencies especially
those whose roles are inter-twinned with phone theft, to act urgently to stem
the ugly tide. The national assembly or parliament should also make laws
prohibiting the use of these phone unlocking softwares, with adequate
punishment spelt out for offenders. A lot of us are guilty of using these phone
unlocking softwares and similar softwares, but stopping the use of these
softwares voluntarily or by government action is the way forward.
The
fallout of following the above listed steps will result in the phone thefts
not being able to unlock stolen phones, thereby making the stolen phone useless
to the person who stole it. When a lot of phone stealers are faced with the
same fate, the resultant effect will be tremendous decline in phone theft nationwide.
It is very possible, when we give it a try.

Some Projects Completed/Nearing Completion in Nigeria in 2015
1. Project: World Trade Centre
Location: Abuja, Nigeria.
Project Cost : $ 1 billion.
The World Trade Centre project is a partnership between the FCT Administration and the First Continental Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Church -gate Investment Limited .
The construction site sits on 6, 102 hectares of land along the Constitution Avenue in the Central Business Area that is located at the centre of the city of Abuja . The project which commenced in March 2011 will have the phase one completed by September 2013 .
The 156 billion Naira development, the World Trade Centre towers is a multi - use complex that will comprise of luxury high rise office towers, luxury residence apartments, conference facilities , shopping malls and entertainment facilities .

Centenary City is an ambitious new project by the Nigerian Government to build a smart city along the same lines of as Dubai ,Monaco and Singapore. The 40 MW Kashimbilla Hydro -Electric Project, situated in Taraba State is designed for agricultural, electrical requirements and water supply . The project is being handled by SCC Nigeria and will be delivered sometime next year .
The dam was initially slated for 18 MW capacity, but following further studies, was expanded to 40 MW . The dam also includes other components such as a water supply intake and a water treatment plant, Construction at the site has attained 95% completion . The plant will be able to deliver water to 400, 000 people and will also be able to service 2000 hectares of farmland, with irrigation, assisting 8000 people.

Location: Niger , Delta, Kogi , Anambra, Imo , Bayelsa , Rivers and Edo, Nigeria.
Project Cost : Approximately 280 Million Dollars.
The dredged Lower River Niger being the largest river in Africa cuts across eight Nigerian states and passes through 152 communities . It has a length of 572 kilometers, which starts from Warri in Delta State to Baro in Niger State . Other states covered by the dredging include : Kogi , Anambra, Imo , Bayelsa , Rivers and Edo . The dredging of the Lower River Niger was flagged- off by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua on September 10 , 2009 .
The primary objective of the Lower Niger dredging is to guarantee the navigational channel is kept constantly opened and functional to deliver sustainable improvement in water transport . As envisaged by Federal government, the dredging is intended to deliver numerous socio -economic benefits to the neighbouring communities and the entire country including: creating an aquatic highway that provides year- round navigation , boosting the waterway networks , ensuring a significant drop in the cost of mass transportation of bulk cargoes such as : the haulage of cement from the Obajana Cement Company or petroleum from proposed refineries at Kogi and Benue. The improved water transportation channel networks will alleviate congestions on the Abuja - Lokoja and Benin- Asaba -Onitsha Expressways. Royal Westminster Dredging and Marine Ltd and William Lloyds Technical Company are some of the project contractors.
6. Project: Lagos Light Rail
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Project Cost : Yet to be confirmed ( 1. 12 – 30 Billion Dollars ) .
Lagos Light Rail is a light rail system, the first of its type in this region of Africa, is envisaged to eventually consist of seven lines ( Red , Blue, Green, Yellow , Purple, Brown and Orange ) . The scheme is approximately 35- kilometer in length with an estimated ridership of a minimum of 500, 000 passengers per day. The following fourteen ( 14) station locations are proposed . The railway system including electric power , signalling , rolling stock, and fare collection equipment will be provided by the private sector under a Concession Contract . The concessionaire is expected to generate her own dedicated electrical power. In September 2011, LAMATA ( Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority ) stated that it would acquire H5 and H6 subway cars from the Toronto Transit Commission ( TTC ) , a public transit operator based in Toronto, Canada. Construction commenced in January 2010, and completion is expected in 2015 . The Blue Line is now being built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation ( CCECC ) . The Blue Line will run 27.5 km from Marina to Okokomaiko , with 13 stations. Lagos State is financing construction of the Blue Line from its own resources. A concession contract is being awarded to finance, supply and operate the railway equipment , including electric power, signalling , trains, and fare collection . The LRMT scheme is being financed by the Federal Government ( 45 %) , Lagos State Government ( 40 %) , and Ogun State Government ( 15 %) .
7. Project: Millennium Tower and Cultural Centre
Location: Abuja, Nigeria.
Project Cost : $550 million
The Millennium Tower and Cultural Centre project is one of the many projects in the Central District of Nigeria's capital city of Abuja. At 170 metres (560 ft), the tower would be the tallest structure in Nigeria. The tower was designed by Manfredi Nicoletti and is part of the Nigeria National Complex which includes the Nigeria Cultural Centre and Municipal Building. Construction started in 2006.
The 170 metre tower will be Nigeria's tallest structure when completed along with an eight storey, low rise, pyramid shaped Cultural Centre. Located in Abuja, the site is severed by a main road so the two structures will be linked via an underground arcade. The tower consists of three cylindrical concrete pillar-like structures varying in height and linked together near the towers first peak using a disc shaped section which will house in its two floors, an observation deck and a restaurant where visitors will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the city below while they eat. Around the pillars of the tower three transparent stainless steel wings wrap delicately but protectively around the base of the tower and gradually open outwards in a fan like fashion as they extend up the height of the tower.

Location: Abuja, Nigeria.
Project Cost : $841.64 million.
Abuja Light Rail is an under construction project to build a light rail transport system in Abuja in FCT, Nigeria.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo performed the official groundbreaking in May 2007,but was completed by Former President Goodluck Jonathan. The project was originally linked to the city's bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The light rail network is expected to link Abuja with satellite towns such as Nyanya, Kubwa, Mararaba and Lugbe.

The 308-bed international specialist hospital, billed for inauguration on Monday, May 25, is an ultra-modern medical facility with six fully integrated modular theatres that will redirect medical tourism to Akwa Ibom State and the country.
The hospital that is equipped with 640 slides CT scan, digital mammography, endoscopy surgery, highly sophisticated intensive care units and medical gas plants is sitting on a large landmass with paperless and fully automated laboratories. It also has a helipad to facilitate easy emergency movements to and from the hospital. The entire hospital system is also hooked up to a global system for best practice.
10. Project: Calabar International Convention Centre (CICC)
Location: Calabar, Cross River, Nigeria.
Project Cost : 9 Billion Naira
Calabar International Convention Centre (CICC) consists of four adjoining sculptural volumes called blocks. The entire edifice sits within its environment, using the gradient of the topography. The building is situated on top of a hill and has tropical panoramic views of the Calabar River from all the foyers. The design and overall aesthetic of the CICC was the creative work of the renowned Danish architects, Henning Larsen Architects.
Calabar ICC is the vision of the former Governor of Cross River State , Senator Liyel Imoke. The Centre will run as a partnership between the Cross River State Government and Alliance Venue and Facility Management.
11. Project: Dangote Group Tomato Plant
Location: Kano, Nigeria.
Project Cost : Unknown
Aliko Dangote has completed construction of the continent’s biggest tomato-processing plant in Kano, Nigeria which is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on tomato paste and puree import. National Salt Company of Nigeria PLC (NASCON) acquired by the Dangote Group as the Core Investor in 1996, imports and sells Petti brand of Tomato Puree.
The Nigerian Voice reports that the 1,200 metric ton installed capacity factory has been built in the Staple Crop Processing Zone Development (SCPZ). Development of this special zone is one of the focus points of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) of Nigeria’s Former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The idea is to attract private sector investments into modern processing of locally produced crops, livestock, fisheries and related agribusiness activities.
Food and agriculture experts expect that the new tomato-processing factory will create price stability for tomato farmers when they harvest and they will do more than one cropping season hence forth. The presence of the factory will encourage farmers to produce more.

The proposed Eko Atlantic is a Lagos
city that is being built on reclaimed waterfront and expected to
accommodate at least 250,000 residents of the city on the project
completion. The Eko Atlantic project extending over 9 square kilometers
and is also expected to have positive effects in restoring and
protecting the state shoreline. At 7km and 40 meters wide, the islands’
walkway will be the longest in the world.
As at May 2012, the Lagos state and
South Energyx Nigeria Limited, developers and city planners of Eko
Atlantic, 17 expatriates firms and over 500 Nigerians firms were
currently working on the project and the expected date of completion is
2015.
The intended residential and commercial
properties designed for the Eko Atlantic will ease pressure on the
already overloaded infrastructure on the Island. Eko Atlantic will
support a new urban development the size of the Manhattan district of
New York City.

Food and agriculture experts expect that the new tomato-processing factory will create price stability for tomato farmers when they harvest and they will do more than one cropping season hence forth. The presence of the factory will encourage farmers to produce more.
